I have always wanted to find buried treasure. When I was a teenager I read about the lost gold in the Yucatan and was dead set on starting an expedition to find it. My measly amount of saved babysitting money wasn’t going to get me very far, but none-the-less I wanted to jump a plane to Mexico. Unfortunately I did not go on that expedition and wasn’t featured in the papers for finding Aztec gold, but my desire to go treasure hunting was and is still there. That is why I loved geocaching so much!
Geocaching is basically high tech scavenger hunting, and I recently took my kids. Take a look at our experience over at Hounds in the Kitchen.
A few things to remember if you decide to go:
- Sign up for a free membership at www.geocaching.com.
- You need a GPS device that offers longitude and latitude numbers. Maybe a friend has one to lend?
- Be careful taking small children by yourself. Lots of these geocaching adventures take you into the woods or near water, and you will find yourself concentrating on the map and not your children. Best to be with someone who you can take turns with watching the kids.
- Take water!! (Maybe even a snack. You could get lost and miss lunch.)
- Wear good shoes that can also get wet (that is the fun of it – you just don’t know where it will take you!).
- Choose a cache that has kid-friendly items so your children can take piece of treasure home with them. They will feel rewarded for all their hard work. (Remember to leave something small behind if you take an item from the cache.)
