Tecumseh: Outdoor Drama in Chillicothe, OH

I have my Grandmother to thank for my love of theater…specifically outdoor theater. Some of my fondest childhood memories include driving the hour to Sugarloaf Mountain to see the outdoor drama Tecumseh. Since that time, I have imposed this theatrical experience on my husband, my Rhode Island family, and recently some of my best friends.

I had been biting at the bit waiting for a time to take my littles ones. I have wanted to expose them to my favorite parts of this play since they were wee babes. Scenes such as when the Native American chiefs from different tribes come down the side of the mountain on horseback, decked out in their war paint, and the Native American dance around the totem pole (I assume it is a war dance). Those specific scenes will always be my favorites. Also, the life of Tecumseh is a rich part of Ohio’s history and kids should know the history of where they live.

I won’t go into the historical facts  – unless you want me to?!…:)

Anyhoo…let’s chat about “should you take your child to see this play?” Well, here’s a rundown of what I think, my personal opinion from going with my two kids (6 years old and 8 years old):

  • Do not take a 6 year old.
  • Do not take a child who has trouble sitting still and would get scared by loud sudden noises.
  • Take an 8 year old…especially since they tend to teach about Native American History in 4th or 5th grade.
  • Yes, I mentioned loud sudden noises. There are lots of them. Actors fire (not real, obviously) guns a lot during the performance, and they aren’t cap guns. They are loud!! (the kids in my crew covered their ears)
  • The violence can be disturbing. There are lots of fight scenes – let’s face it, that is our history, people – white Europeans drove the Native Americans off their land by way of force. If you think your child would be upset by the violence, this is not your show. Pictures on the website can give you a pretty good idea of some of the violence: www.tecumsehdrama.com.
  • The show is long. We left to head out there around 6p and got home close to 12:30am.

More:

  • The show is fun. The amphitheater is cut into the side of the mountain and you sit in actual seats.
  • They have a buffet dinner beforehand if you are into that, and a concession stand.
  • They have a little museum with Native American artifacts found in Ohio.
  • The actors sign autographs and take pictures after the show.
  • You can get a behind-the-scenes tour before the show for a low additional cost.
  • Tickets are $24.95/adult and $17.95 children (10 and under). Pre-order tickets! Also, check your Valpack for coupons or use AAA or I am sure there are other places you can find discount tickets.
