Charity Newsies: Free School Clothes for Kids in Need

(Columbus, OH) – Charity Newsies, the organization that has been providing children with new school clothes since 1907, will implement changes to its application process for the 2015-2016 school year which will result in more children receiving new school clothes before the first day of class.

Charity Newsies will begin taking clothing applications beginning in July at select library locations* and at Charity Newsies’ Headquarters on Monday, Aug. 3. The decision to move the application process up a whole month will enable applications to be processed, home visits scheduled and clothing appointments made before the 2015-2016 school year begins.

“Now that most of the schools in central Ohio begin classes in August, we recognized that in order for more students to receive their new school clothes/uniforms and shoes before the first day of classes, we needed to overhaul our application process,” said Shari Carroll, President for Charity Newsies.

According to Carroll, in addition to applications being taken a month earlier and clothing appointments being scheduled as soon as the first week of August, another change to expedite service is the elimination of home visits to returning families.

“The home visit by Charity Newsies has always been an important part of what we do to encourage children to value their time at school and take their education seriously; however visiting 3-4,000 households in a short period of time was delaying children from getting their clothes until several weeks, if not months, into the school year,” said Carroll.

Carroll said that all new applicants and previous clients who have changed addresses will still receive a home visit.

Eligibility and application requirements:

 Application must be completed by a parent or legal guardian

 Each applicant must live in Franklin County;

 Verified attendance at a Franklin County K-12 school (public, private, charter or

parochial); and

 A valid photo ID, social security card and proof of income (a recent pay stub or Human

Services Benefit summary)

Upon successful completion of the application, each child will receive a home visit (new applicants and previous clients who have moved since last year), and a scheduled clothing appointment at Charity Newsies headquarters to select pants, shirts, socks, undergarments and coat and will receive a $25 voucher for Payless shoes.

Background:

A lack of proper clothing is a main reason why children miss school. New clothes help improve self-esteem, and self-esteem helps children do better at school. Applications for the 2015-2016 school year will be taken through Dec. 1, 2015.

Charity Newsies has worked to empower children since 1907. Its mission is that no child shall be kept out of school for lack of adequate clothing. 100 percent of financial donations help purchase new clothing. Since 1907, Charity Newsies have helped clothe more than 500,000 children. Learn more about Charity Newsies events and how to get involved at www.charitynewsies.com.
