Columbus Modern Dance Company in Columbus, OH

Dance seems to be one of the most popular choices when it comes to classes for littles, second probably to soccer. There are many choices and price ranges, and all are great in one way or another. I always thought ballet or tap were my options when it came to enrolling my girl in classes, but that is hardly the case. Look at Columbus Modern Dance Company, for example, they focus on teaching younger children the art of modern dance.

I spoke with one of the co-directors Laura Puscas, and she shared some great information I want to share with you.  Consider modern dance if you are looking for dance class for your child – what a fabulous way to get your child moving and learning skills that will help them with all forms of dance!

How big are your classes? Do they always do a performance at the end?

Our classes are small and perfect for individualized attention. On average we have about 5 students in the class. There are multiple performance opportunities every year, typically right before our Company shows. For example, the kids dance at our annual Tea in the Garden in Spring, annual Anniversary Gala in Winter, and most likely a Fall show as well. This year’s Company Fall show is at 8pm, so we’re working on a different time for the kids to perform.

Right now the class is half girls half boys.

Another advantage of CoMo is the broad age range. Having ages 4-9 in one class allows siblings to take together!  We have a family of 3 sisters that take class, ages 4, 6, and 9. At a dance studio they would be in 3 separate classes.

What clothing/shoes are needed and how much is that investment?

From an investment standpoint, parents will be happy to know that modern is danced in bare feet! No need for expensive shoes that kids outgrow. Also, there is no strict dress code at CoMo. Dancers can wear any comfortable clothing that they want, just no jeans or skirts. Costumes for performances are flexible and the kids get input on what they would like to wear. Typically we choose a color or theme and outfit from their own closets at home.

Do you offer private lessons for those who want to go on?

We don’t offer private lessons at this time since the kids get so much personal attention in the class.

Why modern over…say…ballet or tap?

Modern is a great way for kids to start dancing. The class has technique vocabulary and skill building similar to other styles (ballet and tap) which is great for strengthening coordination. At the same time, kids have more freedom to explore their own creativity. It’s nice at an early age to roll on the floor, dance to their favorite music, and learn multiple dances to perform over the course of the year.

If kids are already dancing ballet and tap, modern can be a great addition to keep dance fun and develop new skills. Most dancers are introduced to modern between ages 10-18, so our class can give students an early start! Shows like SYTYCD feature Modern/Contemporary heavily, and most college dance programs also focus on modern.
