Columbus City Schools Students Taking on Social Justice

I was pitched by some of this city’s finest students who are from Columbus City Schools’ Whetstone High School. I love them! Great job Ms. Patton – we need more teachers like you!!! Take a look at an incredible event they are putting on this Saturday:

From left to right: Colin Martinez, Andrea Patton (our teacher advisor), Mariya Al-Ghawi, Alice Pajor, Rachel Schwerdtfeger, Akeem Adesiji.Columbus, Ohio– Just Columbus Festival, a Local Ideas Festival organized by a group of Whetstone High School students, led by Bezos Scholar, Akeem Adesiji and his teacher, Andrea Patton, will take place on April 16, 2016 at Fort Hayes High School from noon-9 p.m.. The Festival aims to educate and inspire Columbus area residents of all ages about the social injustices that are prevalent within the community and provide them with an opportunity to get involved and help create a more socially Just Columbus. It will feature remarks on issues ranging from infant mortality to youth-centered environmental action plans from influential speakers such as Mark Lomax and Fadhel Kaboub. We invite Columbus students, community members, and officials to join us at the festival.

WHAT: Three sessions (one hour each) of speakers, food trucks,booths, local musicians

Just Columbus Festival has been planned and organized by high school students who are passionate about creating a socially just Columbus. They hope the event will foster inspiration and involvement within the community and bring together a wide range of people who are seeking a better future for all.

The Bezos Scholars Program at the Aspen Institute is a year-long leadership development program for public high school juniors and educators. It begins with a scholarship to attend the Aspen Ideas Festival and continues through the following school year when Bezos Scholar teams return home to launch sustainable, Local Ideas Festivals that transform their schools and communities. For 11 years Scholar teams have mobilized communities around a range of critical issues to alleviate rural poverty, increase digital literacy, create healthier food environments, inspire conservation leadership, and more.”
