Civil War Reenactment at the Ohio Village

The Ohio Village is hosting Union and Confederate soldiers this weekend. Soldiers will be throwing down camp on opposite ends of the village and will reenact a battle complete with horses, cannons, and gun fire. We went last year and had a blast. The reenactors did a fabulous job playing their chosen soldier parts – General Lee even attempted to arrest my husband (I think hubby’s Space Invaders shirt made him uncomfortable). There was also a cannon demonstration and lots of living history activities and games for the kids.

A Divided House: Civil War Reenactment and Living History Weekend is this weekend June 21 – 22. It runs from 10a – 5p. Battle reenactments – which you do not want to miss – are at 1p on Saturday and 2p on Sunday. I will state, soldiers pretend die. Kids will have questions. Be prepared to answer. Also, it can be loud. One more thing, get there early so you can get a good place to stand/sit so you can see what is going on.

Last year they had a couple of food trucks available for food, and this ended up being a great place to see costumes up close and personal. Reenactors were happy to talk about who they were portraying, explaining the various elements of what they wore and how they lived. There was one man dressed as a Civil War doctor. His collection of medical instruments was interesting/frightening. The reenactors were generally well educated about that time period. I really enjoyed finding out about women who were spies during the war and hearing “Lincoln” speak. The actor who portrayed President Lincoln was amazing.

Anyhow, this was a great way for my kids to experience history. Many times kids have difficulty making a connection to history, but this type of event is exciting and brings history to life!
